Study in China from Pakistan
English is widely used in Pakistani higher education, which makes English-taught programmes in China a natural fit. This page covers the route applicants usually take — including where attestation fits in, which is where most applications lose time.
How the application usually works
- 1 Shortlist programmes, not just universities
Requirements are set programme by programme. Pick 3–6 specific programmes and read each programme page, not only the university homepage.
- 2 Get your documents attested
Many Chinese universities ask for attested certificates and transcripts. Attestation takes time, so start it before the deadline approaches.
- 3 Choose the route
Apply directly to the university, or through the CSC scholarship route that runs via the Chinese embassy — many applicants use both in parallel.
- 4 Visa after admission
With the admission notice and the visa application form for foreign students (JW201/JW202), apply for the X1 visa at the Chinese visa application service centre.
Documents, and how they are attested
- Academic transcripts and certificates — HSSC/Intermediate for undergraduate entry, a bachelor's degree for postgraduate.
- Attestation: check with the university whether documents must be attested by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and whether Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation is also required.
- Two recommendation letters from teachers or supervisors.
- Passport photo page and a recent passport-style photograph.
- The Foreigner Physical Examination Form, completed by a doctor.
- Confirm before you pay: some universities accept scanned attested copies at application stage and only want originals later.
Language of instruction
- English-taught programmes: HSK is usually not required at entry; some ask for IELTS or TOEFL.
- Chinese-taught programmes: HSK 4 or 5 depending on the university and subject.
- Medicine (MBBS) is usually taught in English, and its entry requirements differ from other programmes.
When to apply
- The main intake starts in September; a smaller number of programmes also admit in spring.
- Applications usually open in the previous autumn and close between January and April.
- Start attestation early — it is the step most applicants underestimate.
- Scholarship rounds often close earlier than the university's own deadline.
Common questions
Do I need HEC attestation?
Many Chinese universities ask for attested documents, and HEC attestation is the usual first step for applicants from Pakistan. Some also want Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. Confirm the exact requirement with the university before paying for anything.
Can I apply with Intermediate (HSSC) results?
Yes, for undergraduate entry: universities ask for your Intermediate/HSSC certificate and transcripts. Postgraduate programmes ask for a bachelor's degree.
Do I need IELTS to study in China?
Not always. Many English-taught programmes accept a certificate showing your previous education was in English; others ask for IELTS or TOEFL. Check the specific programme page.
