Study in China from Nepal
Nepali students reach Chinese universities through two main routes: direct application or the CSC scholarship handled by the Chinese embassy. This page covers the usual paperwork, language requirements and timing, up to the X1 visa.
How the application works
- 1 Choose programmes, not just universities
Requirements are set programme by programme. Shortlist 3 to 6 specific programmes and read each programme page before you prepare anything.
- 2 Prepare your documents
SEE and +2 certificates with transcripts for a bachelor's degree, a bachelor's certificate for a master's, two recommendation letters, passport page and the foreigner physical examination form.
- 3 Decide which route you are applying through
Directly to the university, or through the CSC Type A scholarship, which the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu announces each year — the embassy's notice is the document list your file is checked against.
- 4 The visa after admission
With the admission letter and JW201/JW202 form, apply for the X1 visa at the Chinese visa application centre.
Documents and certification
- SEE and +2 certificates plus transcripts for undergraduate entry; bachelor's certificate and transcripts for postgraduate.
- Two recommendation letters from teachers or lecturers, on letterhead with a signature and stamp.
- Passport photo page and a recent passport-style photograph.
- The foreigner physical examination form, completed by a doctor — usually valid for six months.
- Ask each university whether it wants notarised or certified copies, a translation, or just uploads. For CSC Type A, check the embassy's annual notice, because that list governs your application.
Language of study
- English-taught programmes: HSK is normally not required for entry; some universities ask for IELTS or TOEFL.
- Chinese-taught programmes: HSK 4 or 5 depending on the university and the subject.
- A one-year Chinese preparatory course exists at many universities, including for scholarship students who need it before starting a degree.
- Some universities now require the CSCA test for bachelor's applicants, while others accept school certificates or international qualifications — read the programme page.
When to apply
- The main intake is September; a few programmes admit in spring.
- University applications usually run from the previous autumn to between January and April.
- CSC Type A through the embassy opens later in the cycle than many universities and closes earlier — start by reading the embassy notice.
Common questions
Do I need HSK?
Not for English-taught programmes. For Chinese-taught programmes, expect HSK 4 or 5 depending on the university and the subject.
Can I apply with +2?
Yes, for a bachelor's degree you apply with your +2 certificate and transcripts. For a master's you need a bachelor's degree.
Should I apply to the university or through the embassy?
Many Nepali applicants do both. The university route is the school's own admission; the CSC Type A route runs through the embassy's notice and its own document list. Deadlines differ, so filing both is normal practice.
