Study in China from Ethiopia
Ethiopian students reach Chinese universities mainly through two routes: applying directly to the university, or through the CSC scholarship handled by the Chinese embassy in Addis Ababa. This page covers the documents, the language options and the timing, up to the X1 visa.
How the application works
- 1 Choose programmes, not just universities
Requirements are set programme by programme, and can differ between faculties of the same university. Shortlist 3 to 6 specific programmes and read each programme page.
- 2 Prepare your documents
Your Grade 12 transcript and Ethiopian University Entrance Examination result for a bachelor's degree; a bachelor's degree and transcripts for a master's; two recommendation letters, passport page and the physical examination form.
- 3 Decide which route you are applying through
Directly to the university, or through the CSC scholarship — Type A via the Chinese embassy in Addis Ababa, or Type B via a university's own quota. Filing both is common because the deadlines differ.
- 4 The visa after admission
With the admission letter and JW201/JW202 form, apply for the X1 visa at the Chinese visa application centre.
Documents and authentication
- Grade 12 transcript and EUEE result for undergraduate entry; bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts for postgraduate.
- Two recommendation letters from teachers or lecturers, signed and stamped on institutional letterhead.
- Passport photo page and a recent passport-style photograph.
- The foreigner physical examination form, completed by a doctor — usually valid for six months.
- Ask the university whether it wants documents authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy, or just uploaded, and whether a translation into Chinese or English is needed. Get the exact list before you start.
Language of study
- English-taught programmes: HSK is normally not required for entry; some universities ask for IELTS or TOEFL.
- Chinese-taught programmes: HSK 4 or 5 depending on the university and the subject.
- Many universities offer a one-year Chinese preparatory course if you plan to move into a Chinese-taught programme afterwards.
- Some universities now require the CSCA test for bachelor's applicants while others accept school results or international qualifications — the programme page decides.
When to apply
- The main intake is September; a few programmes admit in spring.
- University applications mostly open in the previous autumn and close between January and April.
- Scholarship and embassy routes close earlier than many university deadlines: start there if funding matters for you.
Common questions
Do I need HSK?
Not for English-taught programmes. For Chinese-taught programmes, expect HSK 4 or 5 depending on the university and the subject.
Can I apply with my EUEE result?
For a bachelor's degree you apply with your Grade 12 transcript and school-leaving results; admission requirements for international students are set by each university, so confirm what it accepts. For a master's you need a bachelor's degree.
How do I know which documents must be authenticated?
It depends on the university and, for the CSC route, on the embassy's annual notice. Ask for the exact list in writing before you pay for translations or authentication you may not need.
