Study in China from Vietnam
Vietnam and China share a border and several direct travel routes, but admission is still decided programme by programme. Compare teaching language, city, total cost and the exact documents requested by each university before you shortlist.
How Vietnamese students usually apply
- 1 Shortlist by programme and teaching language
Choose 6–10 programmes across reach, match and safer options. Check whether each degree is taught in Chinese, English or a mixed model, and whether the campus is in the city shown in the brochure.
- 2 Check recognition of your upper-secondary qualification
Most bachelor's applications start with an upper-secondary graduation certificate and transcript. Ask the university whether it also requires the graduation-exam result, a grading explanation or a specific equivalence check.
- 3 Choose admission and scholarship routes
A direct university application and a scholarship application can have separate portals, nomination steps and deadlines. Track both, even when one university asks you to submit scholarship documents through its own system.
- 4 Apply for the visa after admission
Use the current admission documents and JW201/JW202 form requested by the university when applying for an X1 or X2 visa. The visa decision remains with the Chinese embassy or visa application centre.
Documents to prepare
- Upper-secondary graduation certificate and full transcript; postgraduate applicants normally need a bachelor's degree certificate and transcript.
- Passport photo page, recent photograph and the university's current application form.
- Two academic recommendation letters when the programme asks for them; requirements differ between bachelor's and postgraduate applications.
- A study plan or personal statement, especially for competitive programmes and scholarship routes.
- The Foreigner Physical Examination Form when requested; check its validity and which tests must be completed.
- Ask in writing whether scans are enough or whether translation, notarisation, legalisation or authentication is required.
Chinese, English or a preparatory year
- Chinese-taught programmes commonly ask for HSK 4 or HSK 5, but the accepted level and sub-scores vary by university and subject.
- English-taught programmes may ask for IELTS, TOEFL, proof of previous English-medium study or an internal English test.
- A Chinese language year can be a useful route, but it does not automatically guarantee admission to the degree you want later.
- Programmes in business, trade, engineering, computing and Chinese language are common areas to investigate, not a promise that every university offers them in your preferred language.
A realistic application calendar
- The main degree intake is usually in September, while some universities also advertise a spring intake.
- Application windows often open in the previous autumn and close between January and May, but individual programmes can close earlier.
- Scholarship deadlines may be earlier than the university's general admission deadline.
- Start document checks at least 8–12 months before the intended intake if you need translations, legalisation or a language test.
Questions Vietnamese applicants ask
Can I study in China without HSK?
Some programmes are taught in English and may not require HSK. Chinese-taught degrees usually require an HSK level or an accepted language test. Confirm the rule on the current programme page.
Are Vietnamese upper-secondary documents accepted?
Many universities accept an upper-secondary graduation certificate and transcript, but equivalence, minimum grades and extra tests are programme-specific. Ask the international admissions office before applying.
Should I choose a university near Vietnam?
Guangxi, Yunnan and Guangdong can offer shorter travel and different climates, but the right choice still depends on the programme, teaching language, city cost and internship opportunities.
Can I apply directly instead of using an agent?
Yes. Universities generally publish their own application instructions. If you use help, keep control of the official portal, the reference number and all documents submitted.
