Study in China from Nigeria
English is an official language in Nigeria, which makes English-taught programmes the natural starting point for most applicants. This page walks through the route students usually take — from shortlisting programmes to the visa — and what to check first.
How the application usually works
- 1 Shortlist programmes, not just universities
Chinese universities set requirements programme by programme. Pick 3–6 specific programmes and read each programme page, not only the university homepage.
- 2 Prepare your documents
Academic transcripts, your secondary school certificate (WAEC/NECO) or degree certificate, two recommendation letters, passport pages and the physical examination form.
- 3 Choose the route
You can apply directly to the university, or through the CSC scholarship route that runs via the Chinese embassy in your country — many students do both in parallel.
- 4 Visa after admission
Once you have the admission notice and the visa application form for foreign students (JW201/JW202), apply for the X1 visa at the Chinese visa application service centre.
Documents, and how they are legalised
- Academic transcripts and certificates — WAEC/NECO for undergraduate entry, a bachelor's degree for postgraduate.
- Two recommendation letters from teachers or supervisors.
- Passport photo page and a recent passport-style photograph.
- The Foreigner Physical Examination Form, completed by a doctor.
- Check whether the university wants a notarised copy, an apostille or consular legalisation, and whether the translation must be into Chinese or English. Requirements differ — confirm before paying for any notarisation.
Language of instruction
- English-taught programmes: HSK is usually not required at entry, and some ask for IELTS or TOEFL instead.
- Chinese-taught programmes: HSK 4 or 5 depending on the university and the subject.
- If you want to switch to Chinese-taught study later, many universities offer a one-year preparatory Chinese programme.
When to apply
- The main intake starts in September; a smaller number of programmes also admit in spring.
- University applications usually open in the previous autumn and close between January and April.
- Scholarship rounds often close earlier than the university's own deadline, so if you need a scholarship, start there.
Common questions
Do I need IELTS to study in China?
Not always. Many English-taught programmes accept a certificate showing that your previous education was in English; others ask for IELTS or TOEFL. Check the requirement on the specific programme page.
Can I apply with WAEC results?
Yes, for undergraduate entry: universities ask for your senior secondary school certificate (WAEC/NECO) together with transcripts. Postgraduate programmes ask for a bachelor's degree.
When should I start?
About twelve months before your target intake: shortlist programmes in the autumn, prepare documents over the following months, and submit before the programme deadline.
