Studying in Shanghai
Shanghai is China's largest commercial city and a truly global metropolis, home to leading universities, multinational firms and a vast international community. Our directory lists nine universities here. Study life is competitive and cosmopolitan, with world-class facilities and abundant internships. The cost of living is high, but the city rewards students with culture, networking and excellent transport links to Asia and beyond.
Living costs
Shanghai is among the most expensive Chinese cities for students. A dormitory bed may cost roughly 800-2,000 CNY monthly, while off-campus shared housing often runs 2,500-5,000 CNY or more by district. Canteen meals typically cost 12-30 CNY, and metro fares are modest. Budget carefully for food, transport, data and social life. These are indicative only and vary by campus, housing and lifestyle, so verify current prices locally.
Getting around
Shanghai has one of the world's largest metro systems, plus buses, shared bikes and ferries. Two airports and multiple railway stations offer high-speed trains and flights across China and abroad. Students rely on transit cards or phone QR codes for discounted fares, and the network makes commuting and weekend trips very convenient.
Climate
Shanghai has four seasons: hot, humid summers, mild springs and autumns, and cold, damp winters. Summer can be rainy and typhoon-affected, while winter feels chilly indoors. Pack light summer clothes, a warm waterproof coat, layers for changeable weather and an umbrella.
Food
Shanghai cuisine features soup dumplings, braised pork, scallion noodles and sweet-savoury dishes. Students eat cheaply at canteens, noodle shops and convenience stores, while the city offers food from every province and many countries. Portions vary, but budget options are plentiful near universities.
Practical tips
Complete residence registration at the local police station soon after arrival. Get a Chinese SIM and bank account, as mobile payments are standard. Keep your campus card for canteen and library use. Housing is costly, so arrange accommodation early. Save emergency contacts.
