Programmes where Southeast Asian students often start

These are subject areas to investigate, not promises that every university offers them in English or in every intake.

01

Business, trade and Chinese language

Look for programmes that combine Chinese-language study with business, logistics or regional trade. Check whether the degree is taught in Chinese, English or a mixed model.

02

Engineering, computing and applied technology

Compare laboratory access, internship arrangements and whether mathematics and science qualifications match the university’s current entry requirements.

03

Medicine, public health and health sciences

Medicine has extra language, licensing and clinical-training questions. Verify the current programme, teaching hospital and degree recognition before applying.

04

City and travel fit

Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Beijing and Shanghai offer different climates, costs, flight connections and industry links.

A realistic application timeline

Dates differ by university and intake. Use this sequence to avoid waiting for one deadline before starting the next task.

1. Shortlist by evidence

Choose 6–10 universities across reach, match and safer options. Check the current official admissions page for programme availability, language, tuition, dormitory options and deadlines.

2. Check the language route

Chinese-taught degrees may require HSK or a university language test. English-taught degrees may ask for IELTS, TOEFL, previous English-medium study or an internal test; rules vary by university.

3. Prepare documents early

Transcripts, graduation certificates, passport pages, recommendation letters, study plans and physical-examination forms may need translation, notarisation or authentication. Request several copies.

4. Separate scholarship and admission steps

A scholarship application does not replace a university application. Track each portal, reference number and deadline separately, and keep copies of every submission.

Use the data, then verify at the source

The directory helps you discover options. The university’s current official admissions page remains the authority for programme details and deadlines.

Southeast Asia questions to resolve before applying

Can I study in China without speaking Chinese?

Some universities offer English-taught programmes, but availability depends on the degree and intake. Other applicants begin with a Chinese-language programme before entering a degree. Confirm the exact teaching language on the current official programme page.

Should I choose Beijing or Shanghai first?

Start with programme fit and total city cost, not prestige alone. Compare the specific department, teaching language, campus location, accommodation, transport and internship opportunities in each city.

Does a scholarship application also apply to the university?

Usually these are separate processes. A scholarship route may require a university nomination, a separate portal or additional documents. Read both sets of instructions and track them independently.

How can I check whether an admissions page is genuine?

Use the university’s official domain and admissions office page. Be cautious with pages that promise admission, ask for payment to a personal account or cannot explain the university’s own application portal.

Build a shortlist around your real constraints

Start with the complete directory, compare city and language options, then ask a specific question in the community. Admission, scholarships and visas are decided by the relevant institutions.
