Alongside the national CSC scholarship and provincial awards, many Chinese universities run their own scholarships for international students. They are often less competitive, tied to one institution, and sometimes combined with admission in a single application.
What they usually cover
Coverage varies widely — from a full package to a partial discount:
- Full: tuition + accommodation + monthly stipend + insurance (the richest programmes)
- Partial: tuition only, a tuition discount, or a one-off award
- Renewable: many are renewed annually based on your grades and conduct
How to find them
- The university’s “International Students” / admissions pages.
- The scholarship / financial aid section of that site.
- The application form itself — some ask “do you wish to apply for a scholarship?”.
- Asking the international office directly by email.
Search for the university name plus terms like international student scholarship or presidential scholarship.
Types you may see
| Name pattern | Typical scope |
|---|---|
| University/President’s Scholarship | Institution’s own full/partial award |
| Freshman / Outstanding Student award | Merit-based, often partial |
| Tuition-waiver scholarship | Covers tuition only |
| Research/ supervisor funding | Support tied to a project or lab |
How to apply
- Check if it is automatic (some are considered with admission) or needs a separate form.
- Prepare the same documents as admission: transcripts, language certificate, study plan, recommendation letters.
- Note the scholarship deadline — it may differ from the admission deadline.
- Apply to several options if you are eligible; deadlines rarely clash perfectly.
Tips
- Ask the international office which scholarships you qualify for — this is not always obvious online.
- A strong study plan and letters matter for university awards too.
- Some awards can be combined with others; others cannot. Ask before assuming.
- Keep a table: university, scholarship, coverage, deadline, status.
