China’s scholarship and admission deadlines are earlier than most students expect — and they do not all fall at the same time. This page explains the pattern so you can build your own calendar.
The main intake
Most international students start in September. A smaller number of universities admit in spring (February–March). Plan backwards from your intake.
Typical deadline windows (September intake)
| What | Usual window |
|---|---|
| CSC scholarship (via embassy/consulate) | Dec – Mar (often earliest) |
| CSC scholarship (via university, direct) | Dec – Apr |
| Provincial / municipal scholarships | Jan – Apr |
| Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS) | Often shorter windows; varies by programme |
| University admission (self-funded) | Dec – Apr, some to Jun |
| Round 2 / late rounds | Apr – Jun (fewer places, less funding) |
These are patterns, not fixed dates. Each channel publishes its own calendar — always confirm.
Why earliest matters
- Scholarships close before admissions. If you only start when admission opens, you may already have missed the funding deadline.
- Document steps take weeks: transcripts, recommendation letters and notarization.
- Visa comes after admission: do not leave it to the last month.
Month-by-month plan (for next September)
| When | Do this |
|---|---|
| 12–10 months before | Shortlist universities and programs; read requirements |
| 10–8 months | Take HSK/IELTS/TOEFL if needed; request transcripts and letters |
| 9–6 months | Notarize/translate documents; draft study plan or proposal |
| 8–6 months | Open accounts; submit CSC/scholarship applications |
| 6–4 months | Submit university applications; respond to requests |
| 4–3 months | Interviews / entrance exams |
| 3–2 months | Admission letters and scholarship results |
| 2 months | JW202/JW201 → student visa; accommodation |
| 1 month | Flights, packing, arrival plan and residence permit |
Make your own calendar
- List each channel (embassy CSC, university CSC, provincial, university admission).
- Note each deadline and whether it needs a separate application.
- Work backwards for documents and tests.
- Add a 2-week buffer to every date.
Deadlines change every year and differ by channel. Confirm each date on the official CSC portal, the university’s admissions page and your local Chinese embassy.
