HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the standard Chinese-language proficiency test for international students. Whether you need it depends on the language of instruction of the programme you choose.

Chinese-taught programmes

Chinese-taught programmes generally require an HSK certificate. Typical minimums are:

Programme levelCommonly requested
Preparatory / language yearHSK 3–4 (or none, then study Chinese first)
Bachelor’s (Chinese-taught)HSK 4–5
Master’s (Chinese-taught)HSK 5
Doctoral (Chinese-taught)HSK 5 (varies; some accept 4)

Some universities also ask for HSKK (the spoken test) or set their own internal test. Exact requirements differ by university and by programme — confirm the current level on the university’s admissions page.

English-taught programmes

English-taught programmes usually do not require HSK. They typically ask for an English test such as IELTS or TOEFL, or proof that your previous degree was taught in English. Even so, some universities still prefer or require a low HSK level for daily life.

Practical tips

Requirements change. Always confirm the required HSK level on the official admissions page of the specific programme you are applying to.
