MBBS in China: How to Choose an English-Taught Programme
How do I choose an MBBS programme in China?

How do I choose an MBBS programme in China?

Start with the official list, not a ranking: only universities approved by China's Ministry of Education may enrol international students in English-taught clinical medicine. Then check the language you will actually work in (preclinical teaching in English, clinical rotations in Chinese, usually HSK 4 or 5), where the internship year takes place, and whether your own medical council accepts a Chinese MBBS for licensing.

The list matters more than the ranking

  • Only universities on the Ministry of Education list may enrol international students in English-taught clinical medicine. Ask the programme to show its entry on that list, not just the university's name.
  • Programmes with a long track record include Zhejiang, Nanjing Medical, Wuhan, Capital Medical, Sun Yat-sen, Xi'an Jiaotong, Tongji, Sichuan, Shandong, Tianjin Medical, Dalian Medical and China Medical University. Being on the list is the minimum requirement, not a recommendation.
  • A famous university does not automatically run an English-taught MBBS pathway. Check programme by programme, at faculty level.
  • Treat "guaranteed seat" or "no test needed" offers as a warning sign — admission decisions are the university's, and medicine has the strictest file requirements of any field.

The language you will actually work in

  • Preclinical years are genuinely taught in English at approved programmes: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and the rest, with English textbooks and examinations.
  • From the clinical years onwards you examine Chinese patients — taking histories, presenting cases and writing notes happen in Mandarin.
  • Most programmes now require HSK 4, some HSK 5, either before clinical training starts or during it. Start Chinese in year one and treat it as a core subject, not a formality.
  • Ask two direct questions: which clinical teachers work in English, and what share of your marks depends on Chinese-language performance.

Where the clinical years and the internship happen

  • Ask which affiliated hospitals accept international students, how large they are, and how much of each rotation is bedside work rather than observation.
  • The internship year is as a rule done in the university's own affiliated hospitals.
  • Doing the internship outside China needs both the Chinese university's permission and your home regulator's acceptance — many medical councils do not accept an internship done elsewhere, so get both answers in writing before you plan around it.
  • Rotations are usually conducted in Chinese; ask whether bilingual clinical teachers or interpreters are available, and in which departments.

Recognition at home decides everything

  • Before comparing cities, confirm with your own medical council or ministry of health that a Chinese MBBS is accepted for licensing, and under what conditions — programme length, internship location and language requirements all matter.
  • Pakistan: check the PMDC recognition list and start IBCC attestation early. Nigeria: check the MDCN list. India: check the current NMC position carefully before you apply.
  • Ask the programme for the first-attempt pass rate of its last two graduating cohorts in your country's licensing examination. A programme that cannot answer is telling you something.
  • Keep the acceptance criteria in writing — a screenshot of a list is not the same as a letter from the council.

Documents, tests and timing

  • The basic file is the same as for other programmes — passport, transcripts, graduation certificate, photo — plus a biology and chemistry background. Some universities add their own entrance test, an interview or the CSCA.
  • IELTS or TOEFL is not always required when your secondary education was in English, but ask the specific programme rather than assuming.
  • Medicine deadlines are early and the file is heavy: plan 10 to 12 months ahead, and allow time for notarisation and translation.
  • Scholarships are decided separately from admission. University-level and provincial schemes are the realistic routes in medicine; apply on both tracks and keep a self-funded fallback so the scholarship result does not decide your year.

Five questions to send, and the red flags

  • Ask the programme coordinator in writing: (1) the programme's entry on the national list; (2) the year-by-year curriculum with the language of instruction for each stage; (3) which affiliated hospitals host international students and for how long; (4) the HSK level required and at which point; (5) the internship rules and the licensing results of the last two cohorts in your country.
  • Red flags: guaranteed admission, a promised internship in your own country, being asked to pay a deposit to an individual's personal account, or pressure to decide within days.
  • Compare at least three programmes on those five answers before choosing — the differences between them are much larger than the difference in university rankings.

Common questions

Is MBBS in China taught in English?

The preclinical years are taught in English at approved programmes. From the clinical years onwards you work with Chinese patients, so the working language becomes Mandarin and most programmes require HSK 4 (some 5) before or during clinical training.

How long does MBBS take in China?

The standard structure is six years: five years of study plus a one-year internship. Some universities run five-year tracks. Ask for the structure in writing, including whether the internship counts towards the degree and where it can be done.

Do I need an HSK certificate to apply?

Many programmes accept you without HSK at entry and require HSK 4 or 5 before you start clinical rotations. Ask when the requirement falls due and what happens if you have not reached the level in time.

Will my country recognise a Chinese MBBS?

That depends on your own medical council, not on the Chinese university. Check the current recognition list before applying — requirements cover programme length, internship location and language. For Pakistan that is the PMDC list, for Nigeria the MDCN list, and for India the current NMC position.

Can I do the internship year in my own country?

Only if the Chinese university agrees and your home regulator accepts an internship done abroad. Many councils do not, so request both answers in writing before you rely on that plan.
