If you are going to China to study, you will normally apply for an X1 or X2 student visa. The right one depends on how long you will study.
X1 — long-term study (more than 180 days)
- For degree programmes and long courses (over 180 days).
- Issued as a single-entry visa valid for a short period to enter China.
- After arrival you must apply for a Residence Permit for foreign students, which becomes your legal status for the rest of your stay.
- Requires the admission notice and the visa application form (often JW202/JW201), plus other documents.
X2 — short-term study (180 days or less)
- For short courses, exchange terms and language programmes under 180 days.
- Issued with a stay duration matching your course.
- Generally does not require converting to a residence permit.

What you usually need to apply
- Passport valid for the intended stay
- The university’s admission notice
- JW202/JW201 visa application form (where required)
- Visa application form and photo
- Physical examination form (often)
- Proof of funds and other documents the embassy asks for

- Do not overstay. X1 holders must complete the residence permit within the time allowed after entry (commonly 30 days) — check the exact rule for you.
- Apply for the visa in your country of residence; the exact document list is set by the Chinese embassy or consulate there.
