The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), administered by the China Scholarship Council, is one of the main funding routes for international students in China. It is a competitive, merit-based scholarship applied for through official channels — not through private agents.

What it typically covers
- Tuition
- Accommodation (or an accommodation allowance)
- A monthly stipend
- Medical insurance
Coverage and amounts depend on the programme level and the specific scheme.
Who can apply
- Non-Chinese citizens in good health.
- Applicants for undergraduate, master’s, doctoral or non-degree study, depending on the scheme.
- Age and academic requirements vary by level (for example, doctoral applicants are usually older students with a relevant master’s degree).
- Language requirements: Chinese-taught programmes need HSK; English-taught programmes need an English test.
How to apply (channels)
You normally apply through one of these routes:

Each route has its own agency number and deadline. You usually also apply to the university itself.
Deadlines
Most CSC applications open around December–January and close between February and April, ahead of a September start. Exact dates differ by route and by university.
Tips
- Apply early and check which route you are eligible for.
- Prepare documents exactly as requested (see our application guide).
- Apply to the university in parallel where the route requires it.
- There is normally no fee for the CSC route itself — be wary of anyone charging “application fees” to process a CSC application.
