Not every Chinese university requires an entrance exam for international applicants. Many programmes admit students based on their documents and grades, but some — especially competitive programmes and certain fields — add a test or interview.
What you might face
- Document review: the most common “selection” step for international applicants.
- Entrance test / written exam: set by the university or faculty; may cover the subject, Chinese/English or general knowledge.
- Interview: often online, by video; may assess your motivation, background and language.
- Portfolio or audition: for art, design, architecture, music and similar fields.
- Standardised tests: a small number of programmes may ask for SAT/ACT, GRE/GMAT, or their own subject test.
Preparing
- Re-read the programme’s admission requirements for any test or interview note.
- Prepare a short, honest motivation statement: why this programme, this city, this field.
- Practise the interview language (usually Chinese or English, matching the programme).
- For subject exams, revise your undergraduate-level material if applying to a master’s.
- Be ready to explain gaps or transfers in your education history.

- Why do you want to study in China, and why this university?
- What are your career plans after graduation?
- How will you manage the language and the course load?
- Can you explain a project or course you have done?
Logistics
- Interviews are often scheduled in your local time zone — confirm the time carefully.
- Test the platform and your connection in advance.
- Keep a copy of any test instructions the university sends.
