Anyone staying in China must have their accommodation registered. If you stay in a hotel, the hotel does it. As a student, you or your housing provider must complete temporary residence registration at the local police station (派出所) — usually within 24 hours of moving in, depending on the city.
Why it matters
- It is a legal requirement for foreign visitors.
- It is usually needed to apply for the residence permit.
- It is checked when you renew or extend your stay.
Who registers you
- University dormitory: the dorm administration normally registers you.
- Rented apartment: your landlord usually registers you, but you may need to go with them.
- Staying with a friend/relative: the host registers you.

- The landlord’s ID/household details (for private rentals)
- Sometimes a photo
Practical tips
- Ask your landlord/host to register immediately; do not rely on them doing it later.
- Keep the registration slip — you may need it for the residence permit.

- If the police station says you are already registered by your housing provider, ask for confirmation you can show later.
