You apply for a Chinese student visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your country of residence (or a visa centre it authorises). You normally apply after you have been admitted.
Before you apply
You should have:
- your admission notice from the university,
- the JW202 or JW201 visa application form (the university issues this; not every case needs it),
- your passport, valid well beyond your intended stay.
Typical documents
- Passport (with blank pages) and a photocopy
- Completed visa application form and a recent photo
- Admission notice
- JW202/JW201 (as applicable)
- Physical examination form (often required for X1)
- Proof of financial support (varies)
- Previous Chinese visas (if any)
- Any documents the specific embassy requires
Steps
- Confirm which visa type you need (X1 or X2; see our comparison guide).
- Complete the online visa application form for your embassy/visa centre.
- Book an appointment or use the walk-in/agent process they specify.
- Submit your documents and pay the visa fee.
- Collect your passport with the visa, or receive it by post.
Processing time
Processing varies by embassy and season — often around one to two weeks, sometimes longer. Apply early and avoid booking non-refundable travel until the visa is issued.
Common issues
- Missing or inconsistent documents (for example a name mismatch).
- Applying too late for the university’s registration dates.
- Using an outdated version of the visa form.
- Not having the JW202/JW201 when the embassy expects it.
