Quick answers to the questions international students ask most about Chinese student visas. Always confirm specifics with your university and the Chinese embassy/consulate where you apply.

Which visa do I need — X1 or X2?

How early should I apply?

Apply once you have your admission notice and JW202/JW201. Processing often takes one to two weeks but can be longer — apply well before your course starts.

What is the JW202/JW201 form?

A visa application form issued through the university (JW202 for self-funded, JW201 for some scholarship cases). The embassy may require it with your application.

Do I need a health check for the visa?

Often yes for X1, and usually for the residence permit. Requirements vary by embassy and university.

How long do I have after arrival to get the residence permit?

Commonly 30 days from entry on an X1 visa — confirm the exact window on your visa and get it done as early as possible.

Can I work on a student visa?

Generally no, unless you have an additional permit/annotation. Ask your university before doing any paid work.

What if my visa or permit expires soon?

Apply to renew 2–4 weeks before expiry. If it has already expired, contact your university immediately.

Can I travel outside China during my studies?

With a valid residence permit, you can normally leave and re-enter. If you only have a single- entry visa and no permit yet, check before travelling.

Can I bring family?

This is limited and case-specific. Ask the university and the embassy.
