If you entered China on an X1 visa, you must convert it into a Residence Permit for Foreigners within the period allowed after entry (commonly 30 days — confirm the exact window on your visa). The residence permit is your legal status for the rest of your study stay and lets you travel in and out of China.
When and where
- Apply at the entry-exit administration (public security bureau) responsible for your city, usually with help from your university’s international office.
- Apply within the allowed window after arrival — do not let it lapse.

- Passport and X1 visa
- Admission notice and JW202/JW201
- The Foreigner Physical Examination Form (or a health check in China, if required)
- Registration form of temporary residence (from your accommodation/police registration)
- University certificate/letter confirming your enrolment
- Application form and photo
- Fee payment
Process
- Register your address (temporary residence registration) after arrival.
- Complete any required health check.
- Submit the residence-permit application, often through the university.
- Collect the permit (often issued within about a week to two weeks).

- Keep copies of everything.
