Many Chinese provinces and municipalities run their own scholarship schemes for international students studying at universities in that region. They are usually less competitive than the CSC and are tied to universities located in the province.
What they often cover
- Partial or full tuition
- Sometimes an accommodation or living allowance
- Some schemes are partial (tuition only), others are fuller packages
Who can apply
- International students applying to universities in that province.
- Requirements vary by province and by scheme; some target specific regions or fields.
Examples of host regions
Provincial scholarships exist in many regions, for example:
- Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang
- Shandong, Hubei, Sichuan, Shaanxi and others
Each has its own name, coverage and deadline.
How to apply
- Identify the province/city of the universities on your shortlist.
- Check whether that region has a scholarship and which universities participate.
- Apply through the university or the province’s designated system, usually alongside your admission application.
Tips
- Provincial scholarships are often awarded by the university’s recommendation, so applying early and well helps.
- Some are only open after you have been admitted — check the order of steps.
- Combine them with other funding where the rules allow.
