As your studies continue, your residence permit must be extended or renewed. Do this before it expires — applications take time and there is little flexibility.
When to start
- Begin at least 2–4 weeks before the permit expires (longer if a new health check is needed).
- Do not wait until the last days: processing takes time and the consequences of overstaying are serious.
Typical documents
- Passport and current residence permit
- University certificate confirming your continued enrolment
- Accommodation/temporary residence registration slip
- Physical examination form (if the previous one has expired)
- Application form and photo
- Fee
Process
- Get a letter from your university confirming you are still enrolled.
- Prepare documents (and a new health check if required).
- Submit the application at the entry-exit administration (often via the university).
- Collect the renewed permit.
If it has already expired
- Contact your university’s international office immediately.
- Overstaying can lead to fines or other penalties; address it as soon as possible.
Tips
- Set a reminder a month before expiry each year.
- Keep copies of your permit and registration.
- If you plan to travel around the expiry date, renew first.
