China is one of the world’s largest producers of engineers, with strong faculties in civil, mechanical, electrical, materials, energy and transportation engineering. For international students, engineering is one of the most common choices after business and Chinese language.
Common fields
- Civil & structural engineering
- Mechanical / mechatronics
- Electrical & electronic engineering
- Materials science & engineering
- Energy & power engineering
- Transportation & vehicle engineering
- Environmental engineering
Where to study
Many Project 985 / “Double First-Class” universities are known for engineering. Rather than picking by reputation alone:
- Shortlist universities with a strong department in your exact field.
- Check whether the programme is accredited and whether it is taught in English or Chinese.
- Verify lab facilities and industry links (internships matter in engineering).
Language of instruction
| Track | Requirement |
|---|---|
| English-taught | IELTS ~6.0–6.5 or TOEFL ~80–90, or a medium-of-instruction letter |
| Chinese-taught | HSK 4–5 (more programmes, often lower tuition) |
Some universities offer a one-year Chinese preparatory year before the degree.
Typical admission requirements
- Bachelor’s: high-school diploma; strong maths and physics; sometimes an entrance test.
- Master’s: a bachelor’s in a related field, transcripts, 2 recommendation letters, study plan.
- PhD: a master’s, a research proposal and (usually) a supervisor’s agreement.
Costs
Tuition varies widely by university, city and language of instruction — English-taught and professional programmes are usually more expensive. Check current figures on the official page; VisChat does not publish amounts because they change each year.
Career and internships
- Big engineering employers cluster in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Xi’an, Chengdu and Wuhan.
- Practical experience is valued: look for lab projects, competitions and internships.
- Check your visa rules before any paid work or internship.
