Doctoral study in China is often funded, and a supervisor usually plays a central role in admission and funding. Start early — research-based applications take longer than taught ones.
Main funding routes

Eligibility (general)
- A master’s degree (or equivalent) for PhD entry; some programmes accept strong bachelor’s students on a combined track.
- Language: HSK 5 for Chinese-taught; English test/proof for English-taught programmes.
- A research proposal, two recommendation letters (often from professors), transcripts and certificates.
- Age limits apply to some schemes.
The supervisor step
- Identify researchers in your field at your target universities.
- Email a short, specific enquiry with your CV and research interest.
- If they are interested, they may support your application and funding.
Deadlines
- CSC and many university schemes: December–April for a September start.
- Research programmes may accept earlier contact with supervisors; start 6–12 months ahead.
Tips
- A strong, focused research proposal matters more than a long CV.
- Publications or research experience help.
- Apply through the official route; there is normally no fee for the CSC route.
