A master’s degree in China is commonly funded through one of a few routes. Most international students combine a university application with a scholarship application.
Main funding routes

Eligibility (general)
- A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) for master’s entry.
- Language: HSK 5 for many Chinese-taught master’s; IELTS/TOEFL (or English-medium proof) for English-taught programmes.
- Recommendation letters (usually two), a study/research plan, transcripts and certificates.
- Age limits apply to some scholarship schemes.
Deadlines
- CSC and many university scholarships: applications often open December–January and close February–April for a September start.
- University-specific scholarships may follow the admission deadline.
How to improve your chances
- Apply to the right route for your country and field.
- Submit a clear, specific study plan aligned with the programme.
- Contact a potential supervisor for research-based master’s programmes.
- Apply early and keep documents consistent.
Fees and cautions
- There is normally no fee for the CSC route itself.
- Be wary of agents charging to “secure” a scholarship — no one can guarantee one.
