A local phone number is essential in China — you need it for bank accounts, payment apps and many verification codes.
Main carriers
- China Mobile — largest network and coverage.
- China Unicom — often good value plans.
- China Telecom — strong coverage too.
All offer prepaid and contract SIM cards for foreign residents.
Getting a SIM card
- Go to an official carrier store (not just a street stall).
- Bring your passport (and sometimes your visa/residence permit).
- Registration is real-name, tied to your passport — this is a legal requirement.
- Choose a plan with enough data; unlimited or large data plans are common and affordable.
Internet and apps
- Mobile data is fast and widely available; public Wi-Fi exists but needs a local number to log in.
- Some international apps and sites are not directly accessible from mainland China. Many students use services that help (or use apps that work locally). Check what you need for study before you arrive.
- Essential Chinese apps (messaging, payments, transport, delivery) all work locally.
Campus internet
- Dormitories and campuses usually provide wired and Wi-Fi internet (often via your student account). Ask your university for the setup and any cost.
Practical tips
- Set up your SIM early — you will need it for almost everything else.
- Keep your passport handy for the registration step.
- Top up via the carrier app or payment apps.
- Save your new number somewhere safe.
Plans, prices and network rules change. Check current offers in store and follow your university’s guidance for campus internet.
