International students usually choose between an on-campus dormitory and an off-campus apartment. Each has trade-offs.
On-campus dormitory
- Cheapest option, usually booked through the university.
- May be a single room or shared (2–4 people); international student dorms are often better equipped than standard ones.
- Utilities, internet and sometimes cleaning are included.
- Safer and more convenient — close to classes, canteens and campus life.
- Rules apply (visitors, curfews, shared facilities).
Off-campus apartment
- More privacy and space, but more expensive and more admin.
- You typically need a rental contract, a deposit and possibly a guarantor.
- You must handle temporary residence registration with your landlord.
- Utilities, internet and furnishing are usually your responsibility.
What to check before signing
- Exact monthly rent, deposit and what is included (utilities, internet, furniture).
- Contract length and notice period.
- Whether the landlord will complete address registration for you (essential for your residence permit).
- Location and commute; safety; laundry; heating/air-conditioning.
First year advice
Most students live in the dormitory in their first year to settle in, then move to an apartment later if they want more space.
Rules, prices and availability differ by university and city. Confirm dormitory options with your university and check contracts carefully for rentals.
