Common questions about Chinese student visas.
X1 or X2 — which do I need?
- X1: study for more than 180 days → then convert to a residence permit.
- X2: study for 180 days or less.
When should I apply for the visa?
After you have your admission notice and JW202/JW201. Apply well before your course starts; processing often takes one to two weeks but can be longer.
What documents do I need?
Typically: passport, visa application form + photo, admission notice, JW202/JW201, and often a physical examination form and proof of funds. The exact list is set by your embassy.
How long after arrival must I get the residence permit?
Commonly 30 days from entry on an X1 visa — confirm the window on your visa and apply as early as possible.
What is temporary residence registration?
A legal requirement to register your address after moving in (usually within 24 hours). Your dorm or landlord normally handles it; you may need to go with them.
Can I leave and re-enter China during my studies?
With a valid residence permit, you can normally leave and re-enter. If you only have a single-entry visa and no permit yet, check before travelling.
What if my visa or permit expires soon?
Renew 2–4 weeks before expiry. If it has already expired, contact your university immediately — overstaying has penalties.
Can I work on a student visa?
Generally no, unless you have an additional permit/annotation. Ask your university first.
Rules vary by city and change over time. Verify with your university and the Chinese embassy or consulate where you apply.
