Common questions about money as an international student in China.

Can I open a Chinese bank account?

Yes. Bring your passport, visa/residence permit, student ID (or a university letter) and a local phone number. Some branches may ask for a small initial deposit.

How do I pay day to day?

With Alipay or WeChat Pay by QR code. Link a Chinese bank card (smoothest) or an international card where supported.

How does my family send me money?

By bank wire or an international transfer service. Compare fees and exchange rates — online services are often cheaper than wires. Check that the service supports transfers to China and compare the current rate.

Are there limits on international cards?

Often yes — foreign cards may have lower limits or reduced acceptance in some apps. A Chinese bank account avoids most of this.

How much will I spend per month?

It depends on the city and your housing. Dormitory + canteen living is far cheaper than an apartment + eating out. See our cost-of-living guide.

Do I need cash?

Rarely, but keep a little as a backup — some small vendors prefer it.

Can I get a refund of tuition if I don’t enrol?

Policies differ by university. Check the university’s terms before paying.

Is it safe to use informal money changers?

No — use banks or regulated services. Informal exchanges can be illegal and risky.

Bank rules, limits and fees change. Confirm with your bank and the transfer service you use.
