Common questions about day-to-day life as an international student in China.

Where will I live?

Most students start in a university dormitory (cheap, convenient, includes utilities). Later you may rent an apartment for more space and privacy.

Do I need a local phone number?

Yes — you need it for bank accounts, payment apps and most verification codes. Get a SIM card with your passport at a carrier store.

How do I pay for things?

Mainly with Alipay or WeChat Pay by scanning QR codes. Link a Chinese bank card (or an international card where supported). Keep a little cash as backup.

Can I drink tap water?

No — tap water is not for drinking. Use boiled or bottled water.

How do I get around?

Metro and buses are cheap and extensive; pay by QR code or transport card. Use DiDi for ride-hailing and high-speed rail for intercity travel.

What if I get sick?

Start with the campus clinic; larger hospitals handle serious care. Keep your insurance details with you. Ambulance: 120.

Do I need insurance?

Usually yes — universities typically require international-student medical insurance.

Will I cope with the language?

Many programmes are English-taught, but learning basic Chinese helps daily life a lot — and many universities offer Chinese courses.

How do I make friends?

Join orientation, clubs and international student activities, and mix with Chinese students through language exchange.

Everyday arrangements vary by city and campus. Ask your international office and current students.
