Common questions about getting admitted to a Chinese university as an international student.

Do I need an agent to apply?

No — most international students apply directly to universities. Beware of anyone who claims they can “guarantee” admission or charges large fees. VisChat is an information and data site, and it does not process applications.

What are the basic requirements?

Usually: a valid passport, the previous qualification for your level (high-school for bachelor’s, bachelor’s for master’s, master’s for PhD), meeting the language requirement, and the requested documents.

Do I need HSK?

Only for Chinese-taught programmes (typically HSK 4–5, depending on level). English-taught programmes usually ask for IELTS/TOEFL or proof of English-medium study instead.

When are the deadlines?

For a September start, most applications close between December and April, and scholarship deadlines are often earlier. Some universities run multiple rounds. Always check the specific programme.

Can I apply without a language test?

Sometimes, if your previous degree was taught in the relevant language, or if the programme offers a preparatory/language year first. Confirm with the university.

How many universities should I apply to?

A practical approach is 3–6, including a realistic and an ambitious option, plus a scholarship application if eligible.

Do I need to take an entrance exam?

Not always. Many programmes admit based on documents; some add a test, interview, portfolio or audition. Check the programme’s admissions page.

Is there an application fee?

Some universities charge one (set by the university). There is normally no fee for the CSC scholarship route itself. Be wary of large payments to agents.

Requirements vary by university and change over time. Verify with the university’s official admissions page.
