Most international students apply to Chinese universities directly, either through the university’s own online application portal or through a national platform. There is no single central application for all universities, so you will usually submit one application per school.

This guide explains the general process. Deadlines, requirements and systems differ between universities — always confirm the details on the university’s official admissions page.

China university admission requirements: quick answer

There is no single admissions standard shared by every Chinese university. Your application is assessed for a specific programme, university and intake. These are the requirements most applicants need to check:

RequirementWhat to verify
Previous qualificationWhether the programme accepts your school-leaving certificate, degree or equivalent
Grades and subjectsMinimum average, required subjects and an official transcript
LanguageHSK for a Chinese-taught route; IELTS, TOEFL, prior English-medium study or an internal test for an English-taught route
AgeRarely a general admissions rule, but it can apply to a scholarship or selected programme
Admissions testCSCA, a university-specific test, interview or portfolio depending on the subject
HealthMedical form and any additional documents required by the university
PaymentThe stated application fee and the university’s official payment channel

A high average does not compensate for a qualification the programme does not accept, and passing a test does not guarantee a place. Read the exact programme page and admission brochure for the year you are applying.

Overview of the process

  1. Choose 3–6 universities and specific programmes.
  2. Check each programme’s entry requirements (language level, degree background, exams).
  3. Prepare and, where required, notarise your documents.
  4. Create an account on each university’s application portal (or a platform such as the CSC system for scholarship applications).
  5. Upload documents, fill in the application form and pay any application fee the university charges.
  6. Take an entrance test or interview if the programme requires one.
  7. Receive an admission notice and, if you applied for a scholarship, a scholarship result.
  8. Use the admission documents (for example the JW202/JW201 form) to apply for a student visa.

Choosing where to apply

Applying

Because there is no universal portal, expect to:

Keep a spreadsheet of every application, its deadline, fee and status — it is easy to lose track when applying to several universities.

VisChat publishes public information and data. Always verify requirements and deadlines on the university’s current official admission page.
