The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is applied for through the China Scholarship Council’s online system, in addition to the university’s own application. This page explains the general flow; the system is updated from time to time, so follow the on-screen instructions.
Before you start
- Decide your application route: through a Chinese embassy/consulate, through a university, or through another designated agency. Which route you use affects where you send documents.
- Have your documents ready as scans: passport, certificates, transcripts, language certificate, study plan, recommendation letters, physical examination form.
- Note the agency number required by your chosen route.
The general flow
- Create an account on the CSC online application system (Study in China portal).
- Select the application category and the correct programme type and scholarship type.
- Enter personal and education information, including your chosen universities and majors. You usually list more than one choice.
- Upload documents as required; follow the file format and size rules exactly.
- Enter the agency number for your route.
- Submit — before the deadline, which is often earlier than the university’s general deadline.
Tips
- The form is long; save your progress and double-check auto-translated sections.
- Use the exact document names requested; mismatched uploads cause delays.
- Keep the application number safe — you will use it to track results.
- Apply to the university in parallel if required by your route.
Deadlines, agency numbers and document requirements change. Confirm them on the official CSC / Study in China portal and the university’s page.
If you are not applying for a scholarship
