HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the standard Chinese-language proficiency test for international students. Whether you need it depends on the language of instruction of the programme you choose.
Chinese-taught programmes
Chinese-taught programmes generally require an HSK certificate. Typical minimums are:

English-taught programmes usually do not require HSK. They typically ask for an English test such as IELTS or TOEFL, or proof that your previous degree was taught in English. Even so, some universities still prefer or require a low HSK level for daily life.
How to choose your track
- Chinese-taught: more programme choice, often lower tuition, requires strong Chinese.
- English-taught: easier to start, more limited choice, sometimes higher tuition.
- A common path is to study Chinese for a year (preparatory programme) and then enter a Chinese-taught degree.
Practical tips
- Take the HSK as early as possible; results take time and applications have deadlines.
- Check the validity period the university accepts for your certificate.
- Aim one level above the stated minimum if you can — it makes course work easier.
- If you study Chinese in China first, your HSK level on entry may be lower than the final requirement of your degree.
