Most international students apply to Chinese universities directly, either through the university’s own online application portal or through a national platform. There is no single central application for all universities, so you will usually submit one application per school.
This guide explains the general process. Deadlines, requirements and systems differ between universities — always confirm the details on the university’s official admissions page.
Overview of the process
- Choose 3–6 universities and specific programmes.
- Check each programme’s entry requirements (language level, degree background, exams).
- Prepare and, where required, notarise your documents.
- Create an account on each university’s application portal (or a platform such as the CSC system for scholarship applications).
- Upload documents, fill in the application form and pay any application fee the university charges.
- Take an entrance test or interview if the programme requires one.
- Receive an admission notice and, if you applied for a scholarship, a scholarship result.
- Use the admission documents (for example the JW202/JW201 form) to apply for a student visa.
Choosing where to apply
- Level and language: decide whether you want a Chinese-taught or English-taught programme, and whether you meet the language requirement (see our HSK guide).
- Fit over ranking: city, climate, cost of living, programme strength and career links often matter more than a headline ranking.
- Scholarship options: some universities participate in the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) and provincial scholarship schemes; check which ones do before you shortlist.
Applying
Because there is no universal portal, expect to:
- create an account per university,
- complete a profile and upload scans of your documents,
- enter your education history and programme choices,
- submit and track your application status online.
Keep a spreadsheet of every application, its deadline, fee and status — it is easy to lose track when applying to several universities.
After you are admitted
- Confirm the offer and any deposit the university requests.
- Request the admission letter and the visa application form (JW202/JW201) if they are not issued automatically.
- Apply for your student visa, then plan your arrival and residence-permit steps.

Common mistakes
- Missing an internal deadline (many are earlier than they appear).
- Uploading documents that are not notarised or translated when required.
